Ascend the serpentine Lovćen mountain road to the dizzying Njegoš Mausoleum at 1,657 m, then descend to Cetinje, Montenegro's royal capital, for a private tour of its palaces and monasteries. An inland journey of staggering grandeur.
What to expect
Your driver-guide collects you at the port and climbs the legendary 25-hairpin road carved into Mount Lovćen's face — the views back over the bay are staggering at every bend. At the summit, 461 steps lead to the black granite mausoleum of poet-prince Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, guarded by caryatid figures. In Cetinje below, you visit the royal court, the Cetinje Monastery holding a relic of John the Baptist, and the billiard room of the last Montenegrin king. Lunch at a family-run konoba with local lamb and aged Njegoški cheese is typically included.
Good to know
The mausoleum steps can be demanding — allow 20 minutes each way. Full tour runs approximately 5–6 hours; confirm return against your all-aboard time. Private vehicle can be a luxury SUV or minivan depending on group size.
