Reserve a terrace table at Matoula, the oldest taverna in Monemvasia (since 1950), perched on the main street with a breathtaking terrace overlooking the Aegean. Savouring slow-cooked Laconian cuisine here is one of the most atmospheric meals in all of Greece.
What to expect
You walk the medieval main street of the Lower Town and arrive at Matoula, its whitewashed façade unchanged for decades. The terrace tables hang over the edge of the rock with unobstructed views of the shimmering Laconian Gulf — one of the most dramatic restaurant settings in Greece. The menu reads like a Peloponnesian grandmother's repertoire: slow-braised lamb, grilled fresh-caught fish, giant beans in tomato, and the region's legendary honey-drizzled cheeses. Pair it with a carafe of chilled local Malvasia and let the afternoon light do its work.
Good to know
Matoula is on the main street of the Lower Town, roughly a 10-minute walk from the causeway gate. Arrive early (12:30–13:00) to secure a terrace seat — they are not reservable. Dress smart-casual. Closed some winter months; confirm hours if visiting off-season.
