Explore the intersection of ancient Hawaiian celestial navigation and modern astrophysics at ʻImiloa — one of the Pacific's most extraordinary science-and-culture centres — then walk through Japanese-style Liliuokalani Gardens to Coconut Island. A rare, intellectually rich morning in Hilo's soul.
What to expect
Begin in ʻImiloa's galleries, where full-scale traditional voyaging canoes sit beneath a planetarium dome and interactive exhibits trace the Polynesian art of wayfinding by stars — the same stars now studied by the observatories atop Mauna Kea. A planetarium show delivers a immersive journey across the cosmos. From there, stroll five minutes to Liliuokalani Gardens — 24 acres of Japanese-style ponds, stone lanterns, and arching bridges donated to Hilo's Japanese immigrant community — before crossing the footbridge to Coconut Island for views back across Hilo Bay to Mauna Kea. End at the Hilo Farmers Market for locally grown coffee, tropical fruit, and artisan goods.
Good to know
ʻImiloa is 1 mile from the pier — easily walkable or a short taxi ride. Open Tuesday–Sunday from 9 AM; book the private group experience in advance. Liliuokalani Gardens and Coconut Island are free and open daily. Farmers Market is busiest (and best) on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. The entire morning fits comfortably in 4 hours with plenty of all-aboard buffer.
