The second island of the Salvation archipelago is where the most feared prisoners were sent to solitary silence. Wilder and far less visited than Île Royale, its roofless isolation cells now form cathedral-like ruins open to the sky, framed by untouched tropical forest.
What to expect
A short inter-island boat hop from Île Royale lands you on a shore that feels genuinely untouched. The silence here was enforced by rule — inmates were forbidden to speak — and the atmosphere still carries that weight. The ruined solitary wing, its stone corridors tangled with roots and dappled with jungle light, is extraordinary. Jungle trails cross the island to clifftop viewpoints over the Atlantic, with frigate birds and magnificent tropic birds wheeling overhead. The island has no permanent staff, lending it an explorer's intimacy.
Good to know
Arrange the inter-island passage in advance with Guyane Evasion or at the Île Royale dock. Wear insect repellent and solid footwear — the jungle trails are uneven. Build at least 2 hours on Saint-Joseph into your itinerary, separate from time on Île Royale. Verify all-aboard time with extra care given the multi-island logistics.
