The 'Convict Pool' — a natural rock pool carved from the Atlantic-facing cliff — is where prisoners once bathed under guard. Today it offers an exhilarating, utterly unique swim in clear Caribbean-Atlantic water, followed by a legendary buffet lunch at the island's historic auberge.
What to expect
The convict pool sits in a natural volcanic rock formation on Île Royale's Atlantic side — a sheltered basin of clear, deep water with waves crashing spectacularly beyond its rim. It requires a short, confident scramble to access and rewards with one of the most memorable swims imaginable, the open ocean roaring just metres away. Afterwards, the Auberge des Îles — the former prison director's residence, now a charming inn — serves a buffet lunch of Creole and French dishes on its shaded terrace, with squirrel monkeys as uninvited but delightful guests. The combination of physical exhilaration and languid, colonial-era elegance is the perfect ending to a day on the islands.
Good to know
The convict pool is exposed to Atlantic swells — check conditions on the day and exercise caution; it is not suitable for non-swimmers or in rough weather. Reserve the buffet lunch at Auberge des Îles du Salut in advance, especially on busy ship days. The auberge can also be contacted directly for lunch reservations. Allow a full day on the island (depart Kourou by 08:00–09:00) to fit swimming, ruins, and a relaxed lunch before the return boat.
