From a 90-year-old veteran's technicolour hand-painted village to a Japanese-era ice cream emporium housed in a 1927 ophthalmology clinic, this is Taichung's most joyful and photogenic half-day — curated for those who want beauty, story, and exceptional flavour.
What to expect
You arrive at Rainbow Village as morning light illuminates the explosive murals that cover every surface — painted by former soldier Huang Yung-Fu, now in his late 90s, to save his home from demolition. Your guide tells his extraordinary story as you explore the lanes. You then transfer to Miyahara in the historic centre: a brilliantly restored 1927 Japanese opthalmology clinic now housing artisan ice cream, pineapple cakes, and a chocolate library. You select from over 20 flavours under soaring colonial arches. A stroll along the Calligraphy Greenway rounds out the morning.
Good to know
Combine morning (09:00–13:00) departure to beat coach groups at Rainbow Village. Miyahara queues grow after noon — your private guide times the visit perfectly. Both sites are 25–30 min from Taichung Port by private car. Pre-book the private vehicle; walk-up at both attractions is free or low-cost. Pineapple cake gift boxes make exceptional souvenirs.
