Drift by traditional wooden boat through Tainan's magical Sicao Green Tunnel — a cathedral of interlocking mangrove canopies arching over a mirror-still waterway. One of Taiwan's most photogenic and peaceful natural experiences, beloved by both locals and discerning travellers.
What to expect
Board a flat-bottomed wooden boat at the Sicao Dock, where the boatman poles you into a tunnel of grey mangrove (Avicennia marina) so dense that the sky disappears. Dappled light plays on the still water; egrets and kingfishers thread between the roots. The 30-minute glide through the tunnel is followed by an open-water section across the Sicao Lagoon, offering views of Black-faced Spoonbills in season (October–April). The adjacent Taijiang National Park wetlands extend the experience for those who wish to walk the boardwalks.
Good to know
Sicao is approximately 20 min by private car from Tainan Port — conveniently close. Boats run throughout the day but can be busy on weekends; a private charter guarantees departure time. Bring a light layer — the canopy is shaded and can be breezy on the water. Pair with Anping Fort for a superb half-day combination.
