Glide silently along the Tempisque River through Palo Verde National Park — Costa Rica's premier wetland — spotting American crocodiles, howler and white-faced monkeys, and over 300 bird species from the water. A serene, expert-led wildlife encounter unlike any land-based tour.
What to expect
Transfer north from Puerto Caldera (≈1.5 hrs) through ranchland to the Tempisque river launch. As your flat-bottomed boat slips onto the mirror-calm water, a naturalist guide narrates the astonishing birdlife: bare-throated tiger herons, wood storks, and flocks of white ibis explode from the riverside trees. Crocodiles sun on mudbanks just metres away. Howler monkeys boom from the gallery forest canopy. The return journey often includes a stop at a local hacienda for a traditional Tico lunch.
Good to know
Morning departures (7–8 am) are essential for peak wildlife activity and to avoid afternoon heat. Book at least 2 weeks ahead as small-boat spots are limited. Comfortable cotton clothing, a hat, and binoculars are strongly recommended. Allow 7–8 hours total.
