Journey north to Maragogi — nicknamed 'the Brazilian Caribbean' for its impossibly clear water and powder-white sand — and swim the Galés marine sanctuary, where natural pools over a living reef rival anywhere in the tropics. Utterly unmissable.
What to expect
Depart at first light in a private, climate-controlled vehicle for the approximately 2.5-hour drive north along the Alagoas coast. At Maragogi, a small motor boat takes you 3 km offshore to the Galés marine sanctuary, where at low tide the reef creates natural aquariums up to 2 metres deep, warm and teeming with parrotfish, surgeonfish and sea turtles. Your guide ensures you reach the pools at optimal tide. Lunch at a beachfront restaurant in Maragogi follows — whole grilled lobster and fresh ceviche are the order of the day — before the scenic coastal return. Only possible on port days with an early all-aboard (19:00 or later).
Good to know
This excursion requires a long port day (depart by 07:00, return by 18:00) — verify your ship's schedule before booking. Tide tables are essential; the operator will confirm the best reef-access window. Entry to the Galés sanctuary is managed by the local fishermen's association and is paid in cash (BRL) on site. Bring water shoes, reef-safe sunscreen and a waterproof camera.
