Walk the dramatic, wave-sculpted sea cliffs of Onigajo ('Demon's Castle') — a UNESCO World Heritage coastal landscape of honeycomb rock formations, sea caves, and Pacific Ocean vistas that feels entirely otherworldly. One of Japan's most underrated natural wonders.
What to expect
Your guide walks you along the 1 km boardwalk and natural rock path hugging the Pacific coastline, where millennia of wave erosion have carved the Kumano acidic rhyolite into fantastical shapes — arches, caves, columns, and honeycombed walls. The sound of the ocean surging through sea caves beneath your feet is visceral and dramatic. The path winds up to clifftop viewing platforms where the scale of the coastline becomes fully apparent. The area is part of the same UNESCO World Heritage designation as the Kumano Kodo, giving it outsized cultural as well as natural significance.
Good to know
Onigajo is near Kinan / Mie side — approximately 60–90 minutes from Kumano Shingu port by private car. The walk itself is mostly flat but involves uneven coastal rock surfaces. Best light for photography is morning. Combine with Shishi-iwa rock viewing for a full coastal experience.
