Soak in the legendary mineral-rich waters of Ryujin Onsen, ranked among Japan's three greatest hot springs, in a stunning river gorge deep in the Kumano mountains. The silky, skin-beautifying waters have been drawing Japanese nobles since the 8th century.
What to expect
Your private vehicle winds up into the cedar-forested mountains along the Hidakagawa River, arriving at the small, atmospheric village of Ryujin — wooden ryokan buildings stepping down to the river's edge. After checking in at your pre-arranged ryokan, you change into yukata robes and sink into an outdoor (rotenburo) or indoor bath of milky, mineral-laden water at around 42°C. The sensation is immediate: muscles unknot, skin softens. A beautifully presented kaiseki lunch of local mountain vegetables, river fish, and seasonal delicacies follows in a tatami room overlooking the gorge.
Good to know
Ryujin is approximately 60–75 minutes from Kumano Shingu by private car. Pre-book a day-use package (hirugozen / 日帰り温泉) at Ryujin Onsen Motoyubae or a comparable riverside ryokan through KUMANO TRAVEL. Note that tattoos may restrict access to some communal baths — confirm when booking. Allow 3–4 hours on-site.
