Board a restored heritage train from Dunedin Railway Station and ride through one of the most dramatic gorges in the Southern Hemisphere — sheer schist cliffs, Victorian viaducts, and wild tussock high country. A bucket-list rail journey by any measure.
What to expect
The journey begins at Dunedin's magnificent 1906 Flemish Renaissance railway station — itself a listed landmark. The train winds through 22 tunnels and across four viaducts, the most spectacular being the Wingatui and Flat Stream spans suspended high above the gorge floor. Attentive on-board staff serve New Zealand wine and local snacks as the high-country scenery unfolds. The return journey offers a completely different play of light across the schist and tussock.
Good to know
The Partial Gorge return (approx. 3.5 hrs) suits most cruise schedules; the full Middlemarch trip (6 hrs) is only viable with a late all-aboard. Dunedin Station is a 25-minute taxi or shuttle from Port Chalmers. Book the open-air observation car seats at time of reservation — they sell out first.
