Step inside the 1876 Speight's stone brewery — a Dunedin institution and a masterpiece of Victorian industrial heritage — for a guided tour of the working brew-house followed by a tutored tasting of the full range, including limited-release and seasonal ales.
What to expect
The 90-minute tour begins in the 1876 Grade I-listed brewhouse, where your guide walks you through 150 years of uninterrupted brewing history and explains the cold-water geology that made Dunedin perfect for lager fermentation. You move through the working malt store, fermenting cellars, and cooperage before arriving in the Alehouse for a tutored tasting flight of 8 beers, with food-pairing notes provided. The heritage taproom — all kauri timber, brass fittings, and stained glass — is an experience in itself and an ideal setting to purchase bottles to take aboard.
Good to know
The brewery is on Rattray Street in central Dunedin, a 25-minute taxi from Port Chalmers. Tours run at set times; book the first morning session to maximise your day. The premium tasting experience includes food pairings and is worth the upgrade. Minimum age 18 for tasting sessions.
