Stand on the premier observation terrace of the Miraflores Locks and watch Panamax and New Panamax vessels rise and fall just metres away — one of the most jaw-dropping engineering spectacles on earth. Cap the visit with an IMAX film inside the official Canal visitor centre.
What to expect
Arrive early to secure a prime spot on the upper terrace as the first ship of the day enters the lock chamber below — the roar of rushing water and the slow mechanical choreography of miter gates is utterly mesmerising. Inside, four museum floors trace the canal's construction from de Lesseps' failed French attempt through to the 2016 expansion. The IMAX theatre screens a dedicated canal documentary on a screen that does justice to the scale of the subject. A rooftop restaurant lets you linger over lunch while tankers pass at arm's length.
