Journey to the very tip of New Zealand — sacred Cape Reinga, where the Tasman Sea collides with the Pacific in a churning clash of currents. To Māori, this is where the spirits of the dead depart for the ancestral homeland; standing there is to touch something ancient and immense.
What to expect
Departing early from Paihia, your guide threads north through Northland's kauri forests and farmland, stopping at Te Paki Stream for sandboarding down towering dunes into the sea. At Cape Reinga lighthouse you stand at the confluence of two oceans, watching the seas wrestle at the point the Māori call Te Rerenga Wairua — 'the leaping-off place of spirits.' The return journey traces Ninety Mile Beach, a vast, windswept expanse of sand that unfolds to the horizon. A packed gourmet lunch is served en route.
