Perched on vertiginous Corbières ridgelines, these twin Cathar castles are among the most dramatic fortifications in Europe — clouds below, the Pyrenees above, and 800 years of heretic history beneath your feet.
What to expect
Your licensed guide picks you up at port and drives through the wild, aromatic garrigue of the Corbières toward the castle of Quéribus — last stronghold of the Cathars, it clings to a 728-metre pinnacle with a keep that seems to grow from the rock itself. The drive then curves to Peyrepertuse, even more vast: a 'sky fortress' stretching 300 metres along a knife-edge ridge with two separate castle complexes joined by a vertiginous stairway. Your guide explains the brutal Crusade that ended a civilisation, while the panorama — sea to south, Pyrenees to west, Corbières wilderness all around — is simply unforgettable. A picnic lunch with local Corbières wine can be arranged en route.
Good to know
Both castles involve steep, uneven terrain — sturdy footwear is essential. Allow a full day: approximately 60–75 min from Port Vendres to Quéribus. Peyrepertuse and Quéribus are approx. 30 min apart. Book private transfer and guide well in advance; summer dates fill quickly.
