Journey deep into Soberanía National Park by dugout canoe to spend a morning with an authentic Emberá village community. Witness traditional dance, medicinal plant knowledge, and intricate handcraft weaving on the banks of the Chagres River. An intimate human encounter that no city tour can offer.
What to expect
After a 45-minute drive from Balboa, you board a hand-carved piragua (dugout canoe) and glide upstream through cathedral-canopy rainforest. The village welcomes you with song and dance, then disperses into small, informal gatherings where artisans demonstrate cocobolo wood carving and tagua-nut painting. A lunch of fresh river fish, plantain, and yuca is served communally. The return canoe ride offers superb bird-watching opportunities.
Good to know
Wear lightweight, quick-dry clothing and closed shoes you don't mind getting damp. The village is barefoot-optional — sandals left at the water's edge. Allow 5–6 hours total; check return time against your all-aboard. Gratuities in USD are warmly appreciated by the community artisans.
