Cycle a scenic coastal trail from Puerto Villamil to the haunting Wall of Tears — built by prisoners in the 1940s — pausing at flamingo lagoons, giant tortoise reserves, and cerro-orchilla viewpoints. Culture, wildlife, and poignant history woven into one elegant half-day.
What to expect
The flat 7 km trail west of town winds past Villamil Lagoon, where American flamingos and black-necked stilts feed in the shallows at close range. The Centro de Crianza tortoise reserve houses sub-adult giants being prepared for wild release — you can observe them at leisure. The Wall of Tears itself is a sobering, powerful monument: a 100 m-long basalt wall built stone by stone by prisoners of the Isabela penal colony, with a mirador offering panoramic views over the island and ocean beyond.
Good to know
Half-day (~3–4 hours round-trip); the trail is flat and easy on a quality hybrid bike. Depart no later than 08:00 to avoid midday heat and return comfortably before all-aboard. Bring 1.5 L water, sun hat, and camera. The tortoise reserve charges a small separate entrance fee (~USD 3).
