Wall of Tears & Flamingo Lagoon: Isabela's Dark History & Pink Splendour

Cycle or 4WD to the haunting Wall of Tears — built by prisoners in the 1940s — then detour to a flamingo-pink saltwater lagoon where the birds feed in surreal stillness. History, wildlife, and raw landscape in one unforgettable half-day.

What to expect

The route west from Puerto Villamil passes through dry palo santo forest alive with Darwin's finches and Galapagos doves before arriving at the Wall of Tears — a 100-metre-long, 8-metre-high basalt structure built stone by stone by inmates of Ecuador's most brutal penal colony, serving no purpose other than forced labour. The weight of the place is palpable. A nearby viewpoint looks out over pristine coastline and sea turtle nesting beaches. On the return, a short detour through the flamingo lagoon reveals a resident flock of 30–50 Caribbean flamingos feeding in vivid pink against the black lava — one of the most photogenic wildlife moments on the island. Giant land iguanas sun themselves along the path.

Good to know

The guided bike option takes ~3.5 hours at a leisurely pace; a shared 4WD is available for those who prefer not to cycle. Depart Puerto Villamil early (8 AM) to catch flamingos feeding before midday heat. Combine with a Concha de Perla snorkel on the same day for a full Isabela experience. Tender from Caleta Tagus to Puerto Villamil ~45 minutes.
