Slip beneath the surface off Puerto Egas and glide alongside Pacific green sea turtles grazing on algae-covered lava shelves. The water clarity and the sheer volume of marine life make this one of the Galápagos' most spellbinding snorkel sites.
What to expect
Your guide briefs you on the shore before you enter the calm, sheltered bay waters. Within minutes you are surrounded by green sea turtles, reef fish, and the occasional Galápagos penguin rocketing past — a surreal encounter unique to these waters. The volcanic rock formations continue below the surface, creating dramatic swim-throughs colonised by sea urchins and starfish. Wetsuits keep you comfortable in the cool Humboldt-influenced current, and your guide stays in the water with you throughout.
Good to know
Water temperature at Santiago runs 18–24 °C depending on season — a full 3 mm wetsuit is recommended and typically provided. Galapagos National Park entrance (USD 200) is paid at the airport. Confirm snorkel conditions with your operator before departure; James Bay can have surge on windier days. Book at least 4–6 weeks ahead for peak season (June–November).
