Walk 2 km of raw Galápagos coastline where the jet-black sand meets cathedral-like lava formations patrolled by marine iguanas, Sally Lightfoot crabs, and Galápagos hawks. This is Darwin's exact terrain — unchanged in millions of years.
What to expect
The trail begins at the black-sand beach and winds along a shoreline sculpted by centuries of Pacific swells carving the basalt into arches, grottos, and perfectly formed tidal pools. Your naturalist identifies every creature — lava lizards doing push-ups on sun-warmed rock, herons standing motionless at pool edges, and the magnificent Galápagos hawk circling overhead. The tidal pools themselves are natural aquariums: sea urchins, starfish, and small octopuses visible without snorkelling gear. The final stretch delivers sweeping views back to the ship anchorage framed by volcanic ridgeline.
Good to know
The trail is a flat, easy 2 km return and suitable for all fitness levels. Wear closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals — lava rock is uneven and sharp. No food or drink beyond water bottles permitted on the trail (national park regulations). Time the excursion to return 45 minutes before all-aboard to allow for panga transfer.
