Journey into the misty Santa Cruz Highlands to encounter wild giant tortoises roaming freely on their ancestral land, descend into cathedral-like lava tunnels, and peer into the twin volcanic craters of Los Gemelos — a trifecta that defines the Galápagos highlands experience.
What to expect
A short taxi or private transfer whisks you uphill from Puerto Ayora into cloud-forest terrain, where humidity nurtures some of the island's most ancient tortoises. Your licensed naturalist guide explains the subspecies' conservation story as you walk among free-roaming animals. The lava tunnels — formed by cooling lava flows centuries ago — stretch for hundreds of metres underground; then, at Los Gemelos, twin pit craters framed by Scalesia forest reveal the island's volcanic soul. Return to town by midday with time to spare.
Good to know
Half-day (3–4 hours); easily completed before most all-aboard times. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring a light layer — the highlands can be cool and misty. Book a private transfer for the most flexible timing.
