Walk the coastal trail from port to La Lobería beach — where sea lions rule the sand — then ascend Frigatebird Hill for a bird's-eye view of magnificent frigatebirds soaring over the bay. Quintessential Galápagos, steps from the pier.
What to expect
The trail hugs the rugged coastline west of town, passing marine iguana basking colonies and blue-footed boobies nesting on open lava. At La Lobería, Galápagos sea lions — the most relaxed on earth — lounge on white sand and body-surf in the shallows, seemingly indifferent to your presence. The ascent of Cerro Tijeretas (Frigatebird Hill) is gentle but rewarding: a panoramic lookout over Puerto Baquerizo bay, with magnificent frigatebirds performing their aerial choreography at eye level. The descent brings you past the Darwin statue, a landmark of the island's evolutionary significance.
