Devil's Crown — a submerged volcanic crater off Española — is widely rated among the Galápagos' single greatest snorkel and shallow-dive sites. Hammerhead sharks, eagle rays, sea turtles, and vast schools of fish orbit the ancient caldera in astonishing density.
What to expect
The panga circles the jagged, crown-shaped rim before dropping you at the outer wall, where the current channels you gently through the interior of the collapsed crater. Scalloped hammerheads ghost past at depth while white-tipped sharks rest on the sandy floor. Above them, green sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, and a carnival of tropical fish fill the water column. The experience lasts 45–60 minutes in the water and is genuinely world-class — many seasoned divers name it their most memorable site globally.
Good to know
Strong currents make swimming competence essential; inexperienced swimmers should opt for the calmer Española coastal snorkel instead. Devil's Crown is a National Park-controlled site — entry only with a certified naturalist guide. Wetsuit mandatory; provided by operator. Book well in advance as group sizes are strictly capped.
