One of the Galápagos' most spectacular beaches rewards visitors with sea lions sprawled at your feet and, in season, hawksbill turtles nesting in plain sight. The turquoise shallows and powder-white sand make Gardner Bay as visually stunning as it is ecologically extraordinary.
What to expect
A dry landing onto Gardner Bay's impossibly white shore introduces you immediately to the resident sea lion colony — pups nurse in the surf while bulls patrol the waterline, largely indifferent to well-behaved human visitors. Your naturalist guide points out nesting hawksbill turtles between October and March, explaining nesting behaviour and conservation challenges. The beach arcs for nearly a kilometre with the vivid blue of the Pacific as a backdrop — every angle is photogenic. A final snorkel in the bay's sheltered shallows with reef fish and the occasional passing turtle closes the visit perfectly.
Good to know
Turtle nesting season is October–March; outside this window, sea lions and shore birds are still abundant. Dry landing means no wet shoes — sandals are fine. Combine with Punta Suarez in the morning for a full Española day. Bring a wide-angle camera lens — the beach panoramas are extraordinary.
