Board a 1924 wooden rack railway to the 905m summit of La Rhune, the sacred peak straddling France and Spain. Panoramic views sweep across the Atlantic, the Pyrenees, and the entire Basque coast — utterly unforgettable.
What to expect
The 35-minute ascent on open wooden carriages climbs through heath and bracken, with Pottok ponies grazing beside the tracks. At the summit, the entire Basque coast unfolds before you — on a clear day you can see all the way to the Pyrenees' snow-capped spine. A cluster of artisan vendors and a summit café serve local cheeses and Basque cider. The descent feels almost dreamlike, with the silver Atlantic glittering below as you roll slowly back to the valley station at Col de Saint-Ignace.
Good to know
Pre-book tickets online well in advance — the railway fills weeks ahead in summer and the ticket office closes once capacity is reached. Allow ~3.5 hours return from the Col de Saint-Ignace car park, which is a 25-minute taxi/rideshare from St. Jean de Luz port. Check your all-aboard time carefully; trains run every 35 minutes but queues can extend the experience.
