Step ashore at Port Lockroy — a perfectly preserved British wartime base from 1944, now a living museum and the world's most southerly working post office. Send a postcard stamped from Antarctica and walk through 80 years of polar history.
What to expect
A Zodiac delivers you to the wooden jetty of Goudier Island, where you are met by UKAHT staff who share the remarkable story of Operation Tabarin, Britain's wartime Antarctic mission. The base interior — preserved as it was in the 1950s — includes the original radio room, kitchen, and sleeping quarters. Outside, Gentoo penguins nest undisturbed between the guy-ropes and equipment. The post office queue is part of the ritual: your postcards, hand-stamped with the Port Lockroy postmark, will arrive home weeks later — a perfect memento of an unrepeatable journey.
Good to know
Landings are strictly managed by UKAHT to protect the colony; visitor numbers at any one time are capped. Your expedition ship will coordinate a timed landing slot. Cash (GBP or USD) or card payments are accepted in the shop. Post your cards on-site — they are collected by the next supply vessel. Port Lockroy operates only during the austral summer (November–March).
