Walk one of New Zealand's most dramatic coastal tracks — a 12 km loop around the Peninsula where wild fur seals laze metres from the path and the Seaward Kaikōura Range rises vertically from the sea.
What to expect
The track hugs the rugged coastline past fur seal colonies at Point Kean, through the blowhole lookout, and up to Whaler's Bay with its extraordinary mountain-meets-ocean panorama. Interpretive panels explain the Peninsula's Māori history and whaling past. The terrain is well-formed and mostly gentle, though there are some rocky sections near the seals. Allow 3–4 hours for the full loop at a leisurely pace.
Good to know
Start at Point Kean car park, a 10-minute taxi from the pier. No booking needed — simply go. Wear sturdy walking shoes and bring sunscreen, water, and a camera. Respect the 10-metre seal rule — they are wild animals. Time your walk to be back in town by early afternoon to allow for a seafood lunch and transit back to the ship.
