Wade into a shallow Pacific reef at low tide and hand-feed wild stingrays and conger eels under the guidance of local Māori custodians. One of New Zealand's most extraordinary wildlife encounters — raw, real, and completely unforgettable.
What to expect
A short 15-minute drive north of the port brings you to the sheltered tidal reef at Tatapouri. Waders and a briefing are provided before you step into knee-deep water alongside your guide. Wild stingrays — some with wingspans over a metre — glide to your hands for bait fish; conger eels loop around your legs and striped reef fish dart between. Your Māori guide explains the cultural significance of these animals as kaitiaki species and the conservation principles underpinning the experience. The interaction is deeply tactile and surprisingly calm — even those nervous about marine life come away transformed.
