Kanmon Strait Undersea Tunnel: Walk Under the Sea from Kyushu to Honshu

Descend beneath the Kanmon Strait and walk the only pedestrian tunnel in Japan that crosses under the sea, crossing the legendary border between the islands of Kyushu and Honshu on foot.

What to expect

An elevator descends to the tunnel entrance where a clear line on the floor marks the exact boundary between Kyushu and Honshu — a photograph at this spot is obligatory. The tunnel stretches 780 metres beneath the swift-flowing Kanmon Strait, connecting Kitakyushu's Moji district with Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The walk takes roughly 15–20 minutes one way, with the gentle hum of the strait above you and excellent signage charting the history of this remarkable feat of engineering. Pair it with a stroll along the Shimonoseki waterfront or the famous Karato fish market before returning.

Good to know

Pedestrian access is available 6:00 AM – 10:00 PM daily. The Moji entrance is a short taxi ride from the cruise port (combine with a Mojiko Retro visit for maximum efficiency). Wear comfortable shoes; the tunnel is flat but 780 metres each way adds up. Factor in time on the Shimonoseki side if you cross.
