Explore the gilded State Apartments where British viceroys once ruled Ireland and descend into the medieval Viking undercroft beneath Dublin Castle — the beating political heart of Ireland for 800 years, experienced on an expert-guided tour with unhurried access.
What to expect
Your guide begins in the Upper Castle Yard, explaining how this site has been continuously occupied since the Vikings in 900 AD. The State Apartments dazzle with Waterford crystal chandeliers, Irish Donegal carpets and priceless furniture — these are working rooms still used for presidential inaugurations. Descending to the undercroft, you walk on authentic Viking and Norman stonework 10 metres below street level, beside the original dark pool (Dubh Linn) that gave the city its name. The Record Tower, the oldest intact medieval structure in Dublin, provides a dramatic finale. The adjoining Chester Beatty Library — free, and ranked among Europe's finest — is an ideal companion visit.
