A sub-tropical island paradise sculpted from bare rock in the early 20th century, Garinish (Ilnacullin) blooms with Himalayan rhododendrons, Japanese maples, and a Grecian temple against a backdrop of Bantry Bay mountains. Seals bask on the ferry crossing — it is pure Irish magic.
What to expect
The 10-minute ferry crossing from Glengarriff Harbour often passes grey seal colonies lounging on rocks — a wildlife highlight before you've even arrived. On the island, a walled Italian garden, a Martello tower, and a classical Greek temple folly sit among exotic plantings that thrive in the Gulf Stream microclimate. The Casita tea room allows you to linger over the views. George Bernard Shaw famously wrote part of 'Saint Joan' here.
