Swing out over the Dursey Sound in Ireland's only inhabited island cable car — sharing the tiny cabin with locals and possibly their livestock — to reach one of the most remote, traffic-free islands on the Wild Atlantic Way. Cliffs, ancient ruins, and total solitude await.
What to expect
The cable car creaks out over crashing Atlantic surf before depositing you on a tranquil island where the only sounds are wind, waves, and seabirds. Walk the looped trail past the ruins of O'Sullivan Beare's castle and the signal tower to reach the western cliffs — one of the finest seabird vantage points in Munster. Return the same way, timing your cable car crossing with the scheduled departures. The Beara Peninsula drive en route is spectacular in its own right.
Good to know
About 70 km from Bantry; hire a private driver for the day (approx. EUR 160–200 round trip). Cable car runs on a timed schedule — confirm times on arrival at Ballaghboy. Allow a full day (6–7 hours total). This is a rugged, weatherproof-clothing experience — not a manicured attraction.
