A glacial lake cradled by ancient mountains, Gougane Barra is the sacred source of the River Lee and the spiritual heart of West Cork. St. Finbarr, patron saint of Cork, founded a monastery here in the 6th century — the tiny island oratory and its lake reflections are among the most serene and beautiful sights in all of Ireland.
What to expect
Walk the short causeway to the island oratory, its Romanesque arches reflected in still water surrounded by forested mountain slopes. Forest trails fan out through old-growth oak, ash, and pine alongside the lake — take the upper loop for panoramic views of the corrie valley. The celebrated Gougane Barra Hotel sits at the lake's edge and serves exceptional Kerry lamb and Brown bread — ideal for a long, unhurried lunch. The landscape famously inspired the writer Frank O'Connor.
