Hike to Boyd's Tower — a towering 1847 sandstone folly built by eccentric entrepreneur Ben Boyd that was never lit — perched on sea cliffs above a wild, whale-rich coastline. One of NSW's most photogenic heritage landmarks, surrounded by pristine national park wilderness.
What to expect
The coastal trail winds through heathland alive with honeyeaters and wallabies before delivering you to the red-sandstone tower rising 21 metres above sheer ocean cliffs — the views across Twofold Bay toward Eden are simply spectacular. The structure itself is a colonial curiosity: Ben Boyd intended it as a lighthouse to guide ships to his whaling empire, but it was never approved. Interpretive signage and, on ranger-led days, expert storytelling bring the saga vividly to life. On calm days, whales can be spotted from the clifftops below the tower.
Good to know
A taxi or rideshare from Eden Wharf to Boydtown takes approximately 10–15 minutes. The round-trip coastal walk is approximately 2 km; allow 2 hours including the tower and cliff viewpoints. Check the NSW National Parks website for ranger-guided walk schedules. Wear sturdy shoes.
