Wallis's single coastal road loops an island of volcanic black-sand beaches, royal villages, and lagoon vistas that would take your breath away even without the near-total absence of other tourists. Cycling it privately with a local guide is the island's most sensory experience.
What to expect
High-quality hybrid bikes are fitted and adjusted at the waterfront before you set off along the coastal circuit with your English-speaking guide. The road is nearly flat and essentially traffic-free, skirting the lagoon on one side and lush volcanic hillsides on the other. Highlights include the black-sand beach at Teesi, the royal Catholic cathedral of Mata-Utu with its vivid Pacific artwork, and a refreshment stop at a family stall serving fresh coconut, banana cake, and homemade lemonade. The full loop is approximately 25 km; your guide adjusts the distance to your preference and the ship's schedule.
Good to know
The coastal road is mostly flat with one gentle hill; suitable for leisure cyclists. Start at 8:00 am to avoid midday heat. Allow 4–5 hours for the full loop including stops, or 2.5 hours for the half-loop. Helmets included. Confirm all-aboard before departure and share it with your guide.
