Cross the legendary Foveaux Strait by fast ferry and immerse yourself in Rakiura — New Zealand's 'third island' and a national park of astonishing wildness. Ancient rainforest, deserted beaches, and a horizon that feels like the edge of the world.
What to expect
The fast catamaran departs Bluff and slices across the Foveaux Strait in around an hour, with albatross and petrels riding the swell alongside. Arriving in the tiny village of Oban, your guide whisks you into the national park via 4WD, with stops at Ackers Point Lighthouse for seabirds, Lee Bay, and hidden coves along the Rakiura Track. Lunch at the South Sea Hotel — the island's legendary pub — is a ritual. Afternoon is yours to explore at your own unhurried pace before the return crossing.
Good to know
Book the ferry well in advance, especially in summer (Dec–Feb). Check your ship's all-aboard time carefully — allow at least 90 minutes' buffer after the ferry docks back in Bluff. The strait can be lively in bad weather; the ferry operates in most conditions but dress warmly.
