Drive to the summit of Bluff Hill for a 360-degree panorama taking in the Foveaux Strait, Stewart Island, the Southland plains, and on clear days, the distant peaks of Fiordland. This is the view that puts the entire region in spectacular context.
What to expect
The road winds up through native bush to the summit reserve, where a short, well-maintained path leads to the lookout platform. On a clear Southland day, the panorama is jaw-dropping: the Foveaux Strait's deep blue rolling south toward Antarctica, Stewart Island's forested ridgelines, and the vast patchwork of Southland farmland stretching north. Interpretive panels tell the story of the Māori navigators and early European whalers who made this strait their home. Bellbirds and tūī often serenade visitors from the surrounding bush.
Good to know
The lookout road is accessible by standard vehicle. Arrange a local taxi or private car from Bluff or Invercargill in advance — ask your ship's concierge or contact Bluff i-SITE. Weather at the summit changes rapidly; a sunny day below can mean cloud at the top, so time your visit for mid-morning when conditions are typically most stable.
