Wander 160 years of living botanical history at the Singapore Botanic Gardens — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — culminating in the National Orchid Garden, home to over 1,000 species including the rare black orchid and hybrid orchids named for visiting royalty.
What to expect
Enter through the grand Tanglin Gate and immediately shed the city's pace. Heritage rain trees form a cathedral canopy over meandering paths through themed gardens — the Swan Lake, the Evolution Garden, the fragrant Ginger Garden. In the National Orchid Garden, colour saturates every sightline: cascading purple Dendrobiums, blazing orange Arantheras, and the pale, ethereal Vanda Miss Joaquim, Singapore's national flower. Benches, birdsong, and cool shade make this a rare moment of genuine tranquillity.
Good to know
Gardens open daily 5 am–midnight (free); National Orchid Garden 8:30 am–7 pm (last entry 6 pm). Roughly 20 minutes by taxi from Marina Bay Cruise Centre (SGD 18–22). Pre-purchase Orchid Garden tickets at the gates or online via nparks.gov.sg. Allow 2–3 hours minimum.
