Board a crewed traditional Phinisi wooden schooner and sail to the pristine coral reefs of the Karimunjawa Marine National Park — one of Indonesia's last untouched reef systems. Snorkel remote walls, swim with reef sharks, and anchor in lagoons of impossible turquoise.
What to expect
You depart Karimunjawa harbour with a local naturalist guide and a snorkel kit tailored to your level. The boat visits three to four reef systems — shark nurseries, sea-turtle feeding grounds, and technicolour soft-coral gardens — in a single morning. A fresh seafood lunch is prepared on deck using the morning's catch. The afternoon is spent drifting in a sheltered lagoon, hammock strung between the masts, before the return sail at golden hour.
Good to know
Karimunjawa is accessible by fast ferry (approx. 2 hrs) from Jepara near Semarang, or by short charter flight. Best arranged as an overnight if your itinerary allows; confirm all-aboard time before booking. Sea conditions are calmest May–September. Reef-safe sunscreen mandatory in the Marine National Park.
