The Battle of the Java Sea (February 1942) was the largest naval surface battle since Jutland — and the wrecks rest here beneath you. Join a specialist maritime historian aboard a private research vessel for a sobering, extraordinary expedition across these hallowed waters.
What to expect
The day begins with a private archival briefing — maps, photographs, survivor accounts — that brings the 1942 battle to life before you even leave the dock. Aboard the research vessel, the historian narrates the tactical engagement as you cross the actual battlefield. Divers descend to the upper structures of the wrecks in 25–30 m of water; non-divers observe via underwater camera feed on deck. A formal memorial service is conducted at the GPS position of each ship. The experience is moving, intellectually rigorous, and utterly unique.
Good to know
Advanced Open Water or equivalent required for diving; non-diving historians welcome on deck. Confirm availability and exact wreck coordinates with the operator well in advance — permits are required and logistics are tide-dependent. Bring sea-sickness medication; Java Sea swell can be significant. Allow a full day: 08:00–18:00.
