Step into a painstakingly reconstructed Edwardian town, colliery village, and working farm — the North of England's most celebrated living-history experience, where costumed interpreters make the past feel astonishingly real.
What to expect
Spread across 350 acres of County Durham countryside, Beamish transports you wholesale into early-20th-century North East England. Board a period electric tram to the cobbled town street, complete with a working pub, dentist, and cooperative store. The colliery village recreates a pit community with genuine relocated cottages and a real underground mine tour. The farm features rare-breed animals and traditional crafts. Plan for at least 4–5 hours to do it justice.
Good to know
Beamish is approximately 20–25 minutes by taxi or private transfer from the Port of Tyne (approx. GBP 25–30 each way). Book tickets online in advance to secure entry and save slightly. The site is large — comfortable walking shoes are essential. Fully accessible via the internal transport system.
