Journey to Guadeloupe's wild eastern tip where crashing Atlantic surf sculpts extraordinary limestone formations into shapes resembling Gothic cathedrals. The views across to La Désirade island are simply breathtaking.
What to expect
The route east along Grande-Terre's southern coast is dotted with turquoise coves and sugarcane fields before the landscape turns raw and windswept. At Pointe des Châteaux, a short clifftop trail leads to a 19th-century cross with a 360° panorama: Caribbean Sea on one side, Atlantic Ocean on the other. Crashing surf, nesting frigatebirds, and the silhouette of La Désirade on the horizon create a moment of pure elemental drama. Your guide shares Arawak and Creole history tied to this sacred headland.
Good to know
The trail to the cross is short (20 min round-trip) but exposed and uneven — wear comfortable shoes. Sun exposure is intense; bring a hat and reef-safe SPF. Approximately 4 hours total from port. Can be combined with a stop at Plage de Saint-François.
