Explore Hungary's richest collection of medieval and Renaissance sacred art — Flemish altarpieces, Italian primitives, and the extraordinary Garamszentbenedek Holy Sepulchre — in the intimate setting of the Primate's Palace.
What to expect
Pass through the Primate's Palace on the quiet Berényi utca and into galleries that feel more like a private noble collection than a public institution. Italian trecento panels, Flemish altar wings, and gilded reliquaries fill room after intimate room. The centrepiece — the towering wheeled Easter Sepulchre of 1480 — is a masterpiece of medieval theatrical devotion. Allow 60–90 unhurried minutes.
Good to know
Located at Mindszenty tér 2, a short downhill walk from the basilica. Check opening hours in advance (closed Mondays). Photography is permitted in most galleries. Combine with a post-museum coffee at one of the Viziváros (Water Town) terrace cafés directly below.
