Wander Esztergom's atmospheric Baroque riverside quarter — palaces, parish churches, cobbled lanes — then step into the unique Duna Múzeum (Danube Museum) to understand the great river's engineering and natural story.
What to expect
Descend from Castle Hill into the tranquil lanes of the Water Town, where 18th-century palaces and a Baroque parish church cluster around the old royal ferry landing. Your guide pauses at the Bishop's Palace, the Turkish bath remnants, and the hidden courtyards that most visitors walk straight past. At the Danube Museum, interactive exhibits chart the river's 2,860-kilometre journey from the Black Forest to the Black Sea — its floods, its fish, its engineering legends. End with a riverside espresso as barges slide silently past.
Good to know
Viziváros is immediately below the basilica hill — easily walkable from the cruise dock. The Duna Múzeum (Kölcsey utca 2) has limited English signage; a guided visit adds significant value. Allow 2 hours for both sites. Check Duna Múzeum opening hours before visiting.
