Step inside the Spanish Colonial mansion where Hemingway wrote some of the 20th century's greatest novels, with a private after-hours guide who unlocks the stories behind the man, the myths, and the legendary six-toed cats.
What to expect
Enter through wrought-iron gates into a lush tropical garden shaded by kapok trees, and feel Key West's frenetic energy dissolve instantly. The 1851 Spanish Colonial house retains Hemingway's original furniture, his boxing memorabilia, his custom-built swimming pool (the first in Key West, built at scandalous expense), and the painting-covered walls that inspired A Farewell to Arms and To Have and Have Not. Sixty-odd polydactyl cats — descendants of Hemingway's own — roam freely through every room. A knowledgeable private guide transforms the house from a museum into a story.
Good to know
The museum is a 10-minute walk from the cruise pier. Standard admission is available walk-up; private guided arrangements should be made directly with the museum by email or phone at least 2 weeks in advance. Open 9 AM–5 PM daily. Easily combined with a stop at Blue Heaven restaurant (one block away) for brunch.
