Stand inside the largest Romanesque cathedral on earth — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — then walk across the road to climb inside a Boeing 747 and marvel at an actual Space Shuttle. Speyer delivers two of Germany's most jaw-dropping experiences in one day.
What to expect
Speyer sits just 12 miles south of Ludwigshafen — a 20-minute private transfer. Begin at the Kaiserdom: descend into the Imperial Crypt where four Holy Roman Emperors are entombed in eerie, candlelit grandeur. Cross the Altstadt on foot to the Technik Museum where you board a real Antonov AN-22, walk through the Buran Space Shuttle, and peer into the cockpit of a Cold War submarine. The museum's rooftop 747 observation deck offers panoramic Rhine plain views. Lunch at the Museum's café or at one of Speyer's excellent Altstadt restaurants.
Good to know
Museum opens at 9 am daily; allow 2.5–3 hours for a full visit. Add the IMAX dome for EUR 5.50 extra (book at the desk on arrival). Speyer Cathedral is a 10-minute walk from the museum — do the Cathedral first, then the museum. Return transfer to Ludwigshafen leaves ample time before all-aboard.
