Australia's most celebrated pearl farm opens its working tidal creek exclusively to guided groups — watch master pearl farmers 'seed' live oysters, then select and try on South Sea pearls worth tens of thousands of dollars. Broome built its soul on this industry.
What to expect
A scenic 38km drive north of Broome through pindan scrub brings you to a working pearl lease on a pristine tidal creek. A guide explains the 2–3 year life cycle of Pinctada maxima oysters aboard a flat-bottomed boat as you drift past rows of submerged cages. On shore, a pearl farmer performs a live nucleation, inserting a nucleus into an oyster with surgical precision. You then enter the showroom, where finished pearls — from pale rose to deep gold — are laid out, and guides help you understand lustre, shape, and value. There is no pressure to purchase, though many guests do.
Good to know
The tour departs from central Broome (hotel/port transfers available — confirm at booking). Allow 4–5 hours total including transfers. The farm is a designated Heritage site; photography of the live seeding is warmly encouraged. Book directly to secure preferred departure times.
