Drift by flat-bottomed boat through the stunning, vertically walled Yardie Creek gorge — the only permanent freshwater creek in Cape Range — then walk its ochre rim in search of the critically rare black-footed rock wallaby.
What to expect
Board a small, canopied boat at the creek mouth where turquoise salt water meets fresh, and glide between 30-metre canyon walls stained in layers of red, ochre and gold. Your guide narrates the geology and Malgana Aboriginal heritage of the gorge while sharp-eyed passengers spot fairy martins nesting in cliff-face hollows. After the boat tour, take the easy 2 km rim walk for elevated gorge views and almost-certain sightings of the endearing black-footed rock wallabies bounding across the rocks below.
Good to know
Yardie Creek is at the southern end of Cape Range, approximately 65 km from Exmouth Marina — combine with a Cape Range 4WD tour (see above) for efficiency. Boat tours depart at set times daily; the 10 am departure suits most cruise schedules. Wear sturdy footwear for the gorge rim walk. Bring sun protection — shade is limited on the walk.
