Gwion Gwion Rock Art Discovery at Vansittart Bay

Stand before 17,000-year-old Gwion Gwion (Bradshaw) rock paintings at Jar Island in Vansittart Bay, guided by an accredited Aboriginal cultural interpreter. These ethereal figures are among the oldest and most enigmatic artworks on Earth.

What to expect

A Zodiac delivers your small party to the ochre-red shoreline of Jar Island, where your guide leads you along a shaded trail to the rock-art gallery. Painted figures — elegant, elongated, adorned — crowd the overhangs in astonishing density. Your guide explains the spiritual significance and ongoing custodianship of these sites, and you are encouraged to ask questions freely in an intimate setting. The return journey skims across the glassy bay, passing nesting sea eagles and reef herons.
